adobe

1. Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 : I’ve been playing around a little with a free trial of Adobe. I think down the line having a copy of Photoshop is going to be essential to my blog. Right now I’m pretty much using Pic Monkey, but if I want to take my photos to new heights I’m probably going to have to pick up a copy of this! What do you use to edit photos for your blog?

props

2.Photo Booth Props Mustache on a stick Hats Glasses Lips Deluxe kit 40 plus pieces : As I’ve said a ton of times recently on my blog, my 25th birthday party is this Saturday. A photographer friend of mine will be attending so I grabbed these cute props to make sure everyone who comes through the door gets their picture taken. Yes, I know, a lot of people do this kind of thing at a wedding, but why not make my birthday party fun? It’s my party I can cry if I want to … I can do whatever I want to.

oils

3. Essential Oil Gift Set – 100% Pure Therapeutic Grade – Great for Aromatherapy 10ml (Set includes Peppermint, Lavender, Sweet Orange, Rosemary, Eucalyptus & Tea Tree) : I’ve been reading up on so many great uses for essential oils. They can be used for air fresheners, in cleaning products, for making your own lip balm, the possibilities are endless. If you have a great use for essential oils let me know in the comments.

sesche vite

4. Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat High Shine Professional Kit 1/2oz & 4oz Refill : This my absolute favorite top coat polish. It makes everything shine so beautifully! Yes, I know, its made out of unborn chickens or something completely inhumane and gross (SIDE NOTE: I don’t really know what is in it, but I know a lot of people make a big stink about its ingredients), but to be honest, I’m not one of those people who freaks out over those things. It does the job I purchased it to do, and that’s really what matters to me.

whitecomforter

5. Chezmoi Collection White Goose Down Alternative Comforter, King with Corner Tab : When you have 4 kids you wouldn’t dare purchase a white comforter, but I want one so bad. They just look so clean and crisp! I think this purchase may be in my near future. Maybe in my new house in Hawaii? Bets on how long it will take me to regret this purchase?

I hope you enjoyed my Want It Wednesday post. Don’t forget to hop over to Yvonne’s blog and read her wants, then type up your own Want It Wednesday post and link it up so we can all read it. Who knows, maybe your wants will inspire me to go shopping! Catch y’all on Friday!

5 Tips to Saving Money

money

Here are my 5 tips for saving money. I’m certainly no money expert, but these are some things that I do that help. I hope they can help you in your journey to build your savings account!

1. Dedicate to keeping at least half of your tax return in savings.

Personally, I feel the best time to start saving is when you receive your tax returns. If you’ve gone astray from your savings plan this is a great time to get back on track. If you already have a savings started then this is just a huge wad of cash you can drop on top of your savings.

2. Forget your savings account exists.

Forget it’s even there. Typically when I discuss how much money I have left with my fiance I only count the amount of money in my checking account. As far as I’m concerned savings doesn’t count. If i have $100 dollars in my checking account and $2,000 in my savings, then I have $100.

3. Eliminate one habit.

Everyone has one unnecessary habit, whether it is daily Starbucks, smoking, eating out, Monsters, the list goes on and on. Cut this habit and take the money you spend on it and put it in your savings account. For example, Monday through Friday I pretty much get Starbucks every day on my way to work. Typically, it costs me about $5 each day. That’s an easy $25 a week I can put into a savings account and not miss that money, that’s one hundred dollars a month!  Yes, I know, I’ll probably miss my Iced Caramel Macchiato, but I’ll live. Start small, get rid of that thing you do everyday that you don’t need to spend money on and won’t miss much when you don’t have it.

4. Pay for everything with cash.

When I have cash in my wallet I swear it stays there for months, but that cool little plastic card the bank gives me which represents money unseen is way too easy to use!  Take the money out of your account each pay period that you’re willing to blow. If you’re anything like me you’re far less likely to spend the cash in your wallet, than you are to swipe that spiffy bank card.

5. Don’t impulse buy.

This is one I have trouble with. When you see something on the internet and right away you decide to find and buy it. By all means, do your research, find it, bookmark it, then wait. Wait a day or two. If you still want it and still think it’s worth the money go ahead and buy it. You’ll realize a lot of time that you’ll find something better, something you want more, or that you just don’t have a use for that super cute neon orange skirt.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

NOTE: I calculate my minimum savings account amount by adding up all my deductibles for insurance. If everything that could possibly go wrong in one month went wrong I would be able to pay all my deductibles. For example if your car insurance deductible is $1,000 and your home owner’s insurance deductible is $1,000, then you should have at a minimum $2,000 in your savings at all times. This is not how everyone calculates their minimum. I know David Ramsey suggests having 3 months worth of bill payments in your savings account. For some of us with families, car payments, house payments, cell phone, house bills, etc that could easily be ten to fifteen thousand dollars! So while that could certainly make a great long-term goal, I think having all your deductible amounts available to you is a great start.

Sunday Funday Volume 4, 8 Ingredient Meatballs

meatballs

Welcome to Sunday Funday. A post series where I post any random activity for you and your family to enjoy. These simple activities will still leave you with plenty of energy to get up and ready for work the next morning. Take an hour or two this Sunday, sit down with your kids or your spouse and do something. If you complete the Sunday Funday activity please comment and share your story, pictures, and a link if you’ve blogged about it.

One of my favorite things to make as a kid, or with my kids, is meatballs. Everyone gets to get their hands dirty and there’s always enough for everyone to participate. Kids love having the opportunity to say they made dinner, so this is the meal to really get them involved. Wash your hands, kick back, and supervise the kids as they make dinner tonight.  Today I’ll be giving you one of my favorite recipes for meatballs that my mom gave me. Starred ingredients are optional, but i promise even if you don’t like some of the items you’ll probably love them in your meatballs. My kids love pasta so their pretty much always down for Spaghetti and meatballs. If your family is one of those low carbohydrate families just try making the meatballs. They’re great even without noodles!

 8 Ingredient Meatballs

Makes 8 servings

You will need:

1 lb lean ground beef

1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese*

1/3 cup chopped onion*

1/4 cup milk

2 eggs

2 cloves garlic, mined*

1/2 tsp pepper*

2 jar of your favorite 30 ox spaghetti sauce

1 lb cooked spaghetti

How to:

1. In a large mixing bowl combine the first eight ingredients. Roll into 18-20 1 1/2 balls.

2. Pour both bottles of spaghetti sauce into a pot and bring to boil.

3. Add meatballs and return to boil.

4. Reduce heat to low, partially cover, and simmer for 25 minutes.

5. Toss spaghetti with 1  cup of sauce.

6. Top with remaining sauce and meatballs.

I hope you all enjoyed this recipe. If you have a favorite meatball recipe feel free to link me down below. What’s your favorite recipe to get your children involved in?

Side Note: Sunday Funday posts will no longer be weekly. As I’ve found it has turned out to be mostly recipes. I may start to do it only every other weekend. But have no fear a new blog post link up series will be starting right here on my blog this week! Stay tuned for that. Don’t forget to come back and link up!

Oh hey, Friday! – The Link Up

Hey Hey, it’s Friday and I’ve decided to participate in another link up. This time I’m linking up with two lovely ladies Amy from {the farmer’s wife} and Karli from September F A R M.

ECplanner

1. This week was my first full week using my Erin Condren Life Planner. I’m absolutely loving it. I will do a full review on it in August after I’ve been using it for a month. There I will show you how I use mine.

2. I received such a lovely email this week from Amy @ { the farmer’s wife}. It wasn’t a huge deal, but she went out of her way to find me and let me know I was a “no-reply blogger.” It was such a simple thing, but it made me smile that she actually thought it was important enough to tell her reader that she couldn’t reply to their comment because of a setting. Not only did she tell me, but she linked me a tutorial to fix it. I’m proud to announce that I am now able to receive comments in reply to my blogger comments. Thanks so much Amy! Additionally, thank you for the invite to your link up!

thefaultinourstars

3. I’ve heard so many great things about this book. So, when I walked past it in Wal-Mart today [while grabbing a few things for our trip] no spend July was ruined. I’m only about 16 pages into the book and already I don’t want to put it down. If I drop off the face of the planet for a few day you’ll probably be able to find me in my garage reading this book.

4. This week I also joined a GREAT blogging community on facebook run by Lauren of Pink on the Cheek. In just one week of being there I’ve had great encounters with other bloggers. They’re a fine group of bloggers all willing to help one another out. Since I started this blog I’ve been looking for a good blogging community. This one has completely exceeded my expectations and I’m so happy to have found it! Shout out to all you lovely ladies, you’ve made my blogging week awesome!

greatwolflodge

5. Brandon and I are currently here on a couples retreat. Paid, in full by the Army. Thank you, Uncle Sam. They also provide child care, all your meals, everything. So we are spending our extended weekend here enjoy the water park, beautiful hotel, and hopefully really informative relationship classes. (Yes, I used that nifty schedule post feature so you all wouldn’t miss me while I was out having fun).

P.S Lesson Learned: Don’t do a “no spend” month during your birthday month. Hey, at least I lasted a week. =]

7 Guilty Pleasures

7guiltypleasures

We all have them. Here are my 7 Guilty Pleasures

1 / The Smell of Gasoline

I’m not the only one. Whether you want to admit it or not, you love it too.

2 / People Watching

When cops are on my block I’m the first one in the window checking it out. All of a sudden my dog needs to go for a walk. You know, I’m that person. “Did you see the cops at Johnny and Sue’s place last night?” It’s not just the police drama I’m drawn to. I like to sit outside on my patio and watch people walk their dogs past my house, kids ride by on their skateboards. I guess in general. I like to see people. Although, it’s a rare occurrence that I’ll spark up a conversation with any of them. I just like to watch. People do the strangest things.

3/ Crime TV Shows

love watching crime shows. I don’t mind it if they’re fictional, but I love the “reality” ones the most. Locked up, Stalked, Intervention, Special Victims Unit, all of them. I will sit down and watch an entire series all in one sitting. I love to hear what criminals have to say. Why they did it. How they did it. When and where they did it. I’ve always had a crush on police work. I would never be a patrol cop, but I would love to be a detective! What can I say, I’m an adrenaline junkie. No, I’m not crazy. Okay maybe a little strange, but not crazy.

4 / Online Shopping

Browse through sites, throw the stuff you want in your virtual cart, and go to check out. If at check out you decided you’re spending too much money remove some stuff and feel no embarrassment. They make it way too simple.Especially sites like amazon where I can purchase a ton of things with just one click. The only down side is having to wait for your products to get to you. Of course, I’m an Amazon Prime member just for the free 2 day shipping (Yes, I get my moneys worth). I’m also a huge fan of upgraded shipping.

5 / The smell of the Inside of a Washer Machine

It’s okay. You can judge me at this point. Obviously, I’m in to all these strange smells. But seriously, if you’ve never tried it stick your head in the washer right after you empty it, it is the most fabulous, fresh, clean smell. I don’t care what people say. No clean laundry candle or air freshener has that scent. If by some amazing chance you have found one, you better link it in the comments!

6 / Baking

I tell people I’m an awful cook. And well, for the most part I am. I do amateur things like burn water and forget to add flour [oops]. However, I do enjoy baking. I mean let’s think about it. It’s fun. There’s no pressure from your entire hungry family to “hurry up and finish,” and the end result is [usually] delicious.

7/ Country Life

I claim to be a city girl, through and through. I’m from New Jersey. Never shot a gun until I joined the Army. The camping we did was in our living room, sleeping in sleeping bags and watching TV all night. You lock your car well before you even begin to walk away from it. Since joining the Army though, I’ve gotten to know and love the country life. I rather enjoy hunting, sitting out on the lake, and having bon fires. I’m still not crazy enough to leave my window rolled down and my car unlocked, though.

Leave a comment below and let me know what your guilty pleasure is.

The Secret to My Straight Hair

SBS-502100

Growing up mixed white and black living with my white mother, my hair was more often than not a mess. For years and years we tried every straight hair product under the sun. Nothing, I mean absolutely nothing, could get my hair as straight as when I had it done at the salon. So what is the secret to my straight hair? It’s not product. It’s not taking microscopic sections of hair. It’s a blow dryer with a comb attachment and a three row styling comb. Below I have listed for you my straight hair routine. I recommend blow drying your hair immediately after washing for best results. So here it is. The secret to straight hair.

  1. Shampoo and Condition your hair. I’m currently using Joico Moisture Recovery shampoo and conditioner.
  2. Deep Condition your hair. I like to use Macadamia deep hair repair featured in a previous post here.
  3. Immediately blow dry your hair with a comb attachment. I use this one which I love because it’s so easy to hold in your hand. This will pull the hair as you dry it so that it dries straight. If you have thick, coarse hair it will still be really puffy at this point. If you’re talented enough to be able to blow dry and use a paddle brush you can do that. I am not that skilled. At this point you can stop and flat-iron whenever you’re ready.
  4. Split your hair into four sections. Begin in the back, taking one to two-inch sections and flat ironing. When flat ironing make sure the flat-iron is chasing the comb (i.e the comb is running through your hair with the flat-iron right behind it). Don’t worry the comb is not going to melt.
  5. Continue this all the way through your hair. Make sure to decide where you want to part your hair and iron the hair in that direction.
  6. At the end I normally put a little oil on the ends of my hair.

Note: I try not to use a ton of product in my hair since I only wash it once a week. With that said if you like heat protectant and other products by all means through them in there, girl.

The three row styling comb can be found at any beauty supply store. I purchased mine here. If you want to be real ghetto (which I have been) you can just stick three combs together. Hey, sometimes it’s rough. :)

I hope you’ve found these tips useful. If you’ve found a great trick to straightening your hair please leave it in the comments below.

Also, today on Amazon select beauty products are 45% off click here to check it out.
